What Is the iPhone Control Centre?
The iPhone Control Centre is a quick-access panel that puts the most frequently used device toggles within one swipe. On iPhones with Face ID, you swipe down from the top-right corner. On older iPhones with a Home button, you swipe up from the bottom edge. But knowing how to open it is one thing — knowing exactly what each toggle does is another.
Default Control Centre Toggles
Airplane Mode ✈️
Disables all wireless radios simultaneously — cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Use it during flights or when you want a complete digital detox. Note: on modern iOS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth don't fully turn off when you disable them from Control Centre — they disconnect from networks/devices but the radios stay active. To fully disable them, go to Settings.
Mobile Data (Cellular Data)
Toggles your cellular data connection on or off. Your calls and texts still work when this is off, but apps cannot use mobile internet. Useful when you're near your data limit or want to force apps to use Wi-Fi only.
Wi-Fi
Connects or disconnects from Wi-Fi networks. As noted above, tapping this in Control Centre disconnects from the current network but doesn't fully power off the Wi-Fi radio. To turn Wi-Fi completely off, use Settings → Wi-Fi.
Bluetooth
Same behavior as Wi-Fi — Control Centre disconnects paired devices but keeps the Bluetooth radio on for features like Handoff and AirDrop. Full disable requires Settings → Bluetooth.
AirDrop
Controls who can send you files wirelessly. Options are Off, Contacts Only, and Everyone. Long-pressing the network cluster (the box containing Airplane Mode, Cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth) reveals the AirDrop button.
Focus / Do Not Disturb 🌙
Activates your currently selected Focus mode (or Do Not Disturb if none are configured). Long-press to choose a specific Focus mode or set a time limit.
Media and Display Toggles
Brightness Slider
Adjusts screen brightness. Long-press to access True Tone and Night Shift toggles, which adjust the display's color temperature.
Volume Slider
Controls media/ringer volume independently of the physical side buttons.
Screen Rotation Lock 🔒
Locks the screen in portrait orientation. Essential if you read in bed and don't want the screen rotating when you shift position.
Customizable Toggles (Settings → Control Centre)
Beyond the defaults, you can add many additional toggles. Here are the most useful:
| Toggle | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Low Power Mode | Reduces background activity to extend battery life |
| Dark Mode | Switches the entire system UI between light and dark |
| Text Size | Quick access to adjust system font size |
| Accessibility Shortcuts | Triggers your configured accessibility shortcut (e.g., Magnifier) |
| Magnifier | Turns the camera into a magnifying glass |
| Notes | Opens a new note instantly |
| QR Code Reader | Opens the QR/barcode scanner without the Camera app |
Tips for Customizing Your Control Centre
- Go to Settings → Control Centre.
- Remove toggles you never use by tapping the red minus icon.
- Add the toggles you want from the "More Controls" list below.
- Drag the hamburger icon (≡) to reorder your controls.
Key Takeaway
The Control Centre is designed for speed, but its default layout isn't right for everyone. Understanding what each toggle actually does — and adjusting which ones appear — lets you build a Control Centre that matches how you use your iPhone.
